Justice for Youth Coalition List Message
Date: August 15th 2007
Dear Colleagues:
For several years, we have worked together as members of the Justice for Youth Coalition. Our coalitions goal, to unify and strengthen the voice of advocates concerned about youth involved with the juvenile justice system, to support a broad agenda for advocacy, and to provide a forum for information sharing and discussion, remains a vital one to those of us concerned with youth in the juvenile justice system in our state.
I am writing to invite you to our next meeting on Friday, September 21, 2007 at noon at IBM's Hillside Auditorium. Lunch will be provided. Our guest speaker will be Tom Rawlings.
Tom C. Rawlings is Director of the Office of the Child Advocate. In that role, he serves as the child welfare ombudsman for the state and as a senior policy advisor to Governor Sonny Perdue and his agency heads on juvenile justice and child welfare matters. Prior to his appointment to his current position in June 2007, Tom spent seven years as the first full-time juvenile court judge for Georgia's Middle Judicial Circuit. In that position he handled child abuse and neglect and juvenile delinquency cases in a five-county area. As a judge, he was active in establishing a CASA program and a truancy court for his circuit; served on the executive council of the Georgia Council of Juvenile Court Judges; and created a court therapist program to serve the mentally ill and behaviorally disturbed children in his court. Tom has given seminars across the country on issues related to juvenile law and child welfare and has taught juvenile law and American judicial procedure in Romania on a Fulbright Senior Specialist fellowship. In 2006, the State Bar of Georgias juvenile law committee named him Juvenile Court Judge of the Year. A graduate of Duke University and the University of Georgia School of Law, he resides in Sandersville, Georgia with his wife, Kay, and three sons.
The IBM Hillside Auditorium is located at 4111 Northside Parkway. Parking is free. When you enter the building, please check-in at the security desk and be prepared to show I.D.
We are currently updating our membership list. If you wish to continue to receive messages from the Justice for Youth Coalition, please provide your updated contact information to carolbrant@bellsouth.net.
Thank you for your work on behalf of Georgias children. We look forward to hearing from you soon and to seeing you at our next coalition meeting.
Sincerely,
Judge Steve Teske for the Justice for Youth Coalition Steve.Teske@co.clayton.ga.us
